gfycat.com/ClosedSoreKarakul <----- the animated image (you can scale it up or down by clicking and dragging on the image).

As a Ukrainian, first the Maidan and now the war in the east hit me pretty hard. It left a massive impact on both - how I view my own country and my perception of our world system. I was raised in a family of Ukrainian patriots, with us actively helping and deeply supporting the revolution last winter, and who knew that tears and sorrow following the murder of dozens of protesters on the streets of my city would grow into something even more terrible and dreaded?
After that day, after the pavement in Kiev turned red and buildings and trees received pox scars of bullet marks, news from my country started to sound increasingly surreal and bizarre - in a very bad way. The gang in charge of the country to the east started to act on behalf of "their interests" - a merciless propaganda campaign against Ukraine was launched (keywords - Nazi, junta, fascist, Bandera, "дедываевале"), and to my horror it was picked up by the masses. When they took Crimea, these masses were ecstatic - "Crimea is ours!" was the slogan on every "loyal" citizen's lips. After that it got only worse, the bastards in their government weren't done and a Russian-backed insurgency in Donbass started that soon turned into a full scale war. In the early days it seemed like the pathetic torched piles of trash the pro-Russians were calling "barricades against APCs" were no match for said ukrainian APCs - but as time moved on, more and more powerful and devastating weapons were used. When BTRs were considered safe armor, nobody thought of using actual battle tanks. When Ukrainian fighter jets had clear skies, no one thought the insurgents would have the capability to down an airliner at travel altitude - and yet it still happened.
I remember reading a post on a forum where someone was going on how the anti-terrorist operation might take longer than assumed, and a warning that either side might use "Grad" Multiple Rocket Launch Systems. "Grad" is in fact a mighty and terrible instrument of war, as mighty in its devastation as in its inaccuracy, firing a salvo of fourty rockets in twenty seconds, covering a large area with death and terror. And of course, as soon as they were put to use their targets became cities and villages, and people who live within them. I cannot imagine the horror to be at the receiving end of such a weapon, but I tried to express my awe and fear of it. This work here is my personal confrontation with the subject of war in my own country, a war I wish did not happen, a war that was avoidable.

To be able to create the image as I had it in my mind I needed to teach myself some After Effects - so here we are: my first animation :)

I hope you like it, and enjoy!

Photoshop CS6, After Effects CS6, clocked out at over all around 35 - 40 hours.

The vision behind this piece is amazing. You really need to click on the link to the animation to get the full impact of what's going on here. It's stunning with the lighting and the affects of all the little details put into it. Even with the lighting casting a silhouette onto the man, there are still so many details to be seen even on him. Even on the hills and the guns.
The technique is wonderful, and when you click and watch the animations - you say this your first! But they come off so smooth and well done. Which moves into the impact of the piece. The man's posture can really make a viewer put thought into what's going on in his head and what he's feeling and can even invoke the same in the viewer. It's truly a great piece.
